Libraries Building Bridges: Best Practices and Advice for Serving Your Latino Communities. Affiliate Event Palmer House Hilton
Spire Parlor
Description :

A fast-paced, interactive session! Using the Lightning Talk Format, REFORMA librarians representing a variety of library types and locations will each have 20 slides and 15 seconds per slide to talk about their best practices and innovations in serving the Latino community in library services. We’ll then have a Q and A session in which audience members will direct the conversation and ask questions that will help them implement effective practices in their own libraries.

Because of the dynamic and succinct nature of the Lightning Talk format and the variety of library types represented on the panel, attendees will have a chance to hear a broad spectrum of ideas that may help them in serving their own Latino communities and constituents. Moreover, the format and the Q and A time will allow for a deeper and fuller exchange of ideas among colleagues than is sometimes possible, which may enable more meaningful collaboration.

Featured Presentation by Cristina Ramirez, who says: "The Greater Richmond Region in Virginia is home to a new and rapidly growing Latino population. This region, the City of Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico Counties, have seen a large influx of immigrants from a number of Spanish-speaking countries. When I took on the role of Library/Community Services Manager, Branch Manager for Broad Rock Library of the Richmond Public Libraries, I knew there was a large need and gap of services in the community. I had to learn quickly how to get to know, understand, and to create services and programs that would serve and engage the community. This session is an exploration of the steps I took, the City and community partners I worked with, and the experiences I have had since starting my role in May 2012."

Making it Happen: DIVERSITY in your library Affiliate Event Palmer House Hilton
Spire Parlor
Description :

A Model for Engaging Library Staff to Expand Services and Programs for Spanish-speakers in public and academic libraries. Many libraries recognize the importance of reaching out to their Spanish-speaking community, but most have difficulty implementing a practical model that allows for staff involvement system-wide. This session offers the tools needed to strengthen staff and volunteer participation in your library to expand services to the Spanish-speaking public. We will discuss the process for creating teams and successful community partnerships, obtaining feedback through surveys and forums, and providing programming resources for staff. We will also discuss ACRL's Diversity Standards for Academic Libraries.

Attendees will learn how to successfully implement a strategic plan that increases staff involvement in their library in order to expand programs and services for their Spanish-speaking community. They will gain programming ideas and resources, learn strategies to enhance their outreach and external partnerships, and develop ways to evaluate outcomes and performance. Academic librarians will learn ideas about how to promote diversity within their academic campuses. How to promote language diversity in an academic setting? How can we better serve our international students?
