EBSCO Navigating the e-book Business Model Exhibitor session McCormick Place Convention Center

Lots of e-book options – a good thing…once you can make sense of them. Subscribe or purchase? Outright or demand driven purchase? Why not throw in short-term loan and loan-to-own? And these are just business model considerations. This session will address key points to consider when navigating e-book business models and other options, including ordering services (e.g. EBSCOhost Collection Manager, GOBI, and OASIS), e-book providers, user experience, and digital preservation.

Hiding in Plain Cite: The Growing Importance of Content Neutrality in Library Discovery Services Exhibitor session McCormick Place Convention Center
N132
Description :

As discovery services continue evolving to meet the growing needs of tech savvy librarians and end-users, providing unified access to the content purchased by and subscribed to by the library becomes increasingly important. Unfortunately, determining what content is presented for discovery to end-users is less and less under the direct control of the library and more and more determined by individual vendor policies. As the NISO Open Discovery Initiative has shown, there is a clear need for a more standard set of practices for how content is represented in discovery services and for the interactions between the discovery service providers and the information providers whose resources they represent. Described by Library Journal in its April 16th editorial “Discovering Reciprocity”, libraries are now faced with an inherent conflict of interest when content providers attempt to influence or dictate a library’s choice of discovery. Join members of the research library community for a panel discussion on the risks and rewards of “content neutrality”, the assurance that a library can make available its licensed content through the discovery services of its choice. Attendees will share experiences from their institutions and advise on ways in which they can regain control over the discovery of the resources they have purchased and licensed.
