Take a wild ride through the past, present and future of award-winning children’s book art at this stimulating preconference being held at the Art Institute of Chicago, celebrating 75 years of the Randolph Caldecott Medal. Hear about the creative process from an array of Caldecott winners, editors, and art directors. Engage with one another in small book discussion groups and an exciting array of breakout sessions that will increase your knowledge about art and the artistic process, and encourage you to look at Caldecott winning books with a fresh eye.

Highlights include:

- A reception and book signing on Thursday evening, where you'll have an opportunity to visit the Art Institute's exhibition of original art from Caldecott Medal and Honor Books, 2010-13, and get books signed by Caldecott Medal artists. (Books will be available for sale on site.)

- A keynote presentation by Brian Selznick, 2008 Medalist (for The Invention of Hugo Cabret) and 2002 Honoree (for The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins).

- Sneak peeks into the process of creating an award-winning picture book, from "Matching Words and Pictures" featuring Erin and Phillip Stead and Neal Porter; to "Choosing a Medium and a Style" featuring Chris Raschka and Lee Wade; to "Preparing Art for Production" featuring Jerry Pinkney and Patti Ann Harris.

- Interactive book discussions, organized so that you will read one Caldecott winner from each decade, assigned in advance; challenge yourself to read ones you might not have been inclined to otherwise.

- An Honor Book luncheon panel, moderated by Leonard Marcus and featuring Melissa Sweet, Pamela Zagarensky, Peter Brown, and Kadir Nelson.

- Your choice of one of twelve fascinating breakout session topics, several to be presented by Art Institute staff in order to offer you the best art expertise available. In this era of automated tracking and statistics, however, we often deal with different types of systems recording similar types of interactions. Libraries must aggregate their data to be more relevant on the Web; it’s not enough to have collections accessible only through an online catalog, but we need to weave library data throughout the Web. Ted Fons, OCLC Executive Director, Data Services, will demonstrate why we must use the latest ideas and technologies to make our shared library data consumable by Web services (including linked data and graph theory) and rethink the model of shared cataloging—to move away from record management to the management of entities that can be recognized and consumed on the Web.

Alchemy and Outreach: Innovative Uses of Primary Sources for K-8 Poster session McCormick Place Convention Center

When librarians and archivists seek out opportunities to work with classroom teachers, the partnerships not only add value to the traditional school curriculum, they also highlight the collections and educational resources of the participating institution. This poster will present the outcomes of a two-year collaboration with K-8 teachers to design an outreach program that helps students contextualize primary sources in both original and digital formats through the use of medieval manuscripts, images of which will be featured on the poster. Introducing students to the historical and creative aspects of the medieval book as a physical object through theatrical performance, self-discovery heuristics, and hands-on demonstrations is a unique approach that meets common core standards in such areas as language arts and history. Integrating interactive activities has proved successful in helping students acquire the requisite knowledge to place primary source materials into an historical context while preparing them to get the most from an on-site visit or an in-class viewing of digital resources. The interactive methods outlined can be repurposed to showcase any institution’s collection, and the vetted digital repositories can be used as stand-alone teaching resources. Participating teachers’ evaluations of the outreach program are very positive. Written and oral feedback received from parents and students will also be discussed. A sign-up sheet will be available for those who want more information, including samples of pre-learning worksheets and a bibliography of resources. Examples of the scriptorium tools and materials used in the classroom will be on display.

Check, please! Using a checklist for quick information literacy assessment Poster session McCormick Place Convention Center

Assessment checklists are a quick and easy way to detect trends in students’ information literacy (IL) skills. The creation, use, discussion, and evaluation of these checklists at the University of Washington Bothell & Cascadia Community College Campus Library (UWB/CCC) has resulted in some best practices and contributed to a more robust assessment toolkit for librarians. The checklists have been found to be particularly helpful in doing quick and dirty assessment of student poster sessions or presentations within classes, and at events where student work is presented to a larger campus audience, such as a colloquium or research fair. They have thus provided an option for assessing IL learning outcomes beyond reviewing papers, bibliographies, or library worksheets. These rubric-type forms have also opened up discussions for instructional design, collaboration, and collection development with faculty, students and fellow librarians. This poster will display an example of one librarian’s checklists over time, showing how they provided her with a quick snapshot of weak student performance, how it gave clear evidence to discuss changes to the curriculum with her faculty, and how modifications to an assignment addressed this gap, and how improvement was clearly evidenced in the subsequent checklists. This poster will also display a couple variants of assessment checklists used at UWB/CCC and how they were quickly generated based on learning outcomes already identified for a particular assignment, class, or program, including the ACRL Information Literacy Standards.

Flip This Class! Using a Flipped Classroom Approach to Teach Information Literacy Poster session McCormick Place Convention Center

Description :

A flipped classroom turns the traditional teaching approach upside down. Instead of a lecture in class and hands-on work at home, instructors assign material to be reviewed ahead of time, allowing for problem-solving activities during class time. Librarians can use this same approach to more fully engage students in “one-shot” or embedded library instruction. Students view or listen to tutorials or podcasts on developing search terms and using limiters and subject headings in advance, for example, then come to class prepared to apply these concepts to their research topics. Rather than spend class time focusing on learning the skills and tools to use library resources, the session is spent addressing concepts and applying what was learned in the pre-class assignment. Allowing students to do hands-on work in class brings an active-learning element and opportunity for critical thinking that is often lacking in traditional library instruction, especially “one-shot” sessions. It also moves the control of instruction and content away from the librarian and allows for more student inquiry. And, it gives librarians a chance to work more closely with students while they are engaged in their research. The combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities can also better address different types of learners and can be easily adapted to varying skill levels and subjects. This poster session will address ways librarians can use the flipped classroom approach to teach information literacy in a learning-centered manner.

The MAGIC of Web Tutorials: Developing Best Practices to (Re)Focus on Users Poster session McCormick Place Convention Center

Libraries of all shapes and sizes are moving instructional content online. But, what are the best practices in this area? What works, and what doesn’t? What can libraries and librarians do to make online information appealing, engaging, and useful enough that patrons take advantage of it?

The Oakland University Library considered these questions and undertook a project to (re)assess how to leverage the library’s social and technology resources to make online tutorials more focused on students’ and faculty’s needs. Through a multi-part assessment process, the eLearning and Instructional Technology Librarian reconsidered the web tutorials offerings through faculty and staff feedback, a literature review of best practices, and an analysis of other universities’ online tutorial offerings. From this information, the eLearning and Instructional Technology Librarian developed the MAGIC guidelines (Manageable, Accessible, Geared at users, Informative, Customizable) for restructuring online tutorials to put users at the center. Employing MAGIC meant integrating web tutorials at points-of-need, identifying and sharing essential information, and engaging students in the learning whenever possible. Library faculty evaluation at the beginning and end of this process support the effectiveness of MAGIC in improving online tutorials!

This poster will use before-and-after images of tutorials and the library’s tutorials page to illustrate MAGIC and the shift toward user-centered resources. Other visuals, including infographics of faculty feedback, will illustrate how the MAGIC framework helped one library advance its online learning options. Furthermore, attendees will be able to experience the library’s revamped tutorials.

Music students are non-traditional researchers because their first venue for learning is practice and performance. However, standards by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) require students to master research skills such as “gain multiple disciplinary perspectives” and the “ability to identify and locate information.” The ACRL Information Literacy Standards as well as the Music Library Association (MLA) “Information Literacy Instructional Objectives” also support information literacy outcomes for students in both music performance and music teaching degrees.

Photos, graphic organizers, maps, and more… address the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner and promote information fluency through technology-rich, graphic inquiry projects that enhance content-area learning. Graphic inquiry involves weaving visual representations throughout the inquiry process.

This poster is intended to provide a practical approach to incorporating graphic inquiry across the curriculum. Specifically, it is designed to help the school librarians identify tools and techniques for using graphic inquiry with their students. This visually rich poster provides numerous, standards-based inquiry activities and projects that incorporate traditional materials as well as emerging social and collaborative technologies.

The poster is divided into three sections: visualize, innovate, and create. (1) Visualize through Graphic Tools and Learning Tasks including organizers, maps, images and symbols, diagrams & illustrations, and charts & graphs. (2) Innovate through Graphic Inquiry Elements. Explore five elements of graphic inquiry including questioning, exploration, assimilation, inferences, and reflection. (3) Create through Meaningful, Standards-based Processes and Products. Explore seven graphic-rich ways students can share their understandings through SCORE IT! (storytelling, communication, organization, representation, evidence, inference, and teaching).

The poster will include specific, real-world examples based on research conducted in the development of my new book titled Graphic Inquiry by Annette Lamb and Danny Callison.
