Makerspaces and Maker Faires are taking the country and the world by storm. As libraries have long been places where people from many backgrounds and experiences can gather to learn, exchange ideas, and work collaboratively, library makerspaces are a natural fit.

LITA and LibraryLab are joining together to hold this pre-conference at the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Branch, where a new library makerspace is being installed.

Attendees will participate in a tour of the facility in addition to a combination of fun hands-on sessions that will offer participants opportunities to discover and learn about the maker movement. Discussion and brainstorming sessions with nationally recognized makers and early adopters of the makerspace in libraries movement will introduce participants to ideas, successes and failures, offering a rich dialogue about the art of the possible for all types of libraries. Takeaways will include a deeper understanding of the maker community, "making" and how it fits within the library's existing service model, and practical ideas and concrete solutions for those inspired to bring the movement to their home communities/libraries.

To date, shared print programs have focused largely on journals. Monographs pose a different challenge, and require new approaches. Information from circulation and holdings records can help libraries share responsibility for print collections, while enabling careful drawdown of surplus copies and protection of the scholarly record.

This preconference will highlight the experiences of several groups: Michigan Shared Print Initiative, Connect New York, Maine Shared Collection Strategy, the California State University system, and others.

Steven D. Levitt, co-author of the upcoming Think Like A Freak and of the smash #1 international bestseller Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything, promises to turn your brain inside out before the conference even starts. He’s likely get your problem-solving juices flowing to the benefit of you and your library, showing how applying counterintuitive approaches to everyday problems can bear surprising results.

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? How much do parents really matter? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask, but Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head.

Think Like A Freak (October 2013), a “must-have handbook for decision making,” intends to radically transform the way you look at every aspect of your life. Levitt and co-author Stephen J. Dubner analyze the decisions we make, the plans we create, and the morals we choose and show how their insights can be applied to daily life to make smarter, harder, and better decisions. They also offer entertaining and practical insights, from “The Upside of Quitting” to “How to Succeed—With No Talent.”

Steven Levitt is a Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, known for his work in the field of crime, and was co-editor of the Journal of Political Economy. In January, 2004 he was awarded the John Bates Clark medal by the American Economic Association for the economist under 40 who made the greatest contribution to the discipline. He was chosen as one of Timemagazine's "100 People Who Shape Our World" in 2006 and in 2009, co-founded The Greatest Good, a business and philanthropy consulting company.

Levitt’s presentation is part of the conference’s Opening General Session, where ALA President Maureen Sullivan and others welcome attendees and set the stage for the coming days.

Using the Lightning Talk Format, REFORMA librarians representing a variety of library types and locations will each have 20 slides and 15 seconds per slide to talk about their best practices and innovations in serving the Latino community in library services. We’ll then have a Q and A session in which audience members will direct the conversation and ask questions that will help them implement effective practices in their own libraries.

Because of the dynamic and succinct nature of the Lightning Talk format and the variety of library types represented on the panel, attendees will have a chance to hear a broad spectrum of ideas that may help them in serving their own Latino communities and constituents. Moreover, the format and the Q and A time will allow for a deeper and fuller exchange of ideas among colleagues than is sometimes possible, which may enable more meaningful collaboration.

This region, the City of Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico Counties, have seen a large influx of immigrants from a number of Spanish-speaking countries. When I took on the role of Library/Community Services Manager, Branch Manager for Broad Rock Library of the Richmond Public Libraries, I knew there was a large need and gap of services in the community. I had to learn quickly how to get to know, understand, and to create services and programs that would serve and engage the community.
