Description:

Instant messaging has been a technology mainstay for over 30 years and, in more recent times, has developed into a reliable and efficient library service, adding an exciting online dimension of connecting with the patron. Where do we go from here? Pew and other studies show that increasingly more internet users are engaging in video chat, and, combined with screen-sharing technologies, video chat reference, qua library service, is a compelling offering for consideration in library service offerings.
During the upcoming Spring 2013 semester, a video chat reference pilot will be delivered through the Journalism Library at Columbia University Libraries. Off-site video chat reference with screen-sharing will be provided through two popular software technologies – Skype and Google+ Hangouts – on both a walk-in and consultation-by-appointment basis.
The presenters will share details of the service offered and the usage incurred, as well as the marketing efforts involved. A viable plan for service expansion will be addressed, with special emphasis on perceived gains of the new service and ways in which it could be leveraged in strengthening patron relations. Additionally, potential integration with other library support services such as e-resource troubleshooting, Facebook, and Twitter will be examined. Usage will be displayed via graphs; images with text will be used to demonstrate service detail highlights.
