Contextualization, and evolution in light of the growth of postgraduate programs in Brazil, of the Portal de Periódicos [Portal of Periodicals], the largest virtual library of scientific information in the country, part of the Programa de Apoio à Aquisição de Periódicos (PAAP) [Program to Support the Acquisition of Periodicals] from the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) [Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education], a foundation belonging to Brazil´s Ministry of Education. The Portal de Periódicos currently serves more than 400 research and higher education institutions in Brazil, offering access to more than 33 thousand different periodicals, referential databases such as WoS, Scopus, SciFinder (CAS) among others, 11 patent databases, more than 153 thousand electronic books including titles from the 18th century, audiovisual databases, and other contents. In 2012, the Portal reached more than 70 million queries and downloads, more than 211 thousand daily users. Since the deployment of the Portal, the number of Brazilian publications indexed in large referential databases grew 600%, according to Web of Science, and the country, in 2008, reached the 13th position in the ranking of scientific production, according to National Science Indicators (NSI). This presentation is based on the contextualization of the Portal’s creation, its evolution in light of the growth of the educational and science and technology systems in the country, and real-time navigation of the Portal de Periódicos to observe how it works.
