This session is about creating stories that children and families turn to again and again, building the foundation for literacy and a lifelong love for learning. The panel will include American and Mexican authors writing culturally relevant books to engage young readers. From the librarian’s perspective we will look at materials that inspire U.S. Latinos and explore the differences between literacy development in the U.S. and Mexico.
Presenters include Judy Goldman, a bilingual Mexican children’s author, and René Saldaña, Jr. a Latino young adult author. It will also include Tim Wadham, Director of the Puyallup Public Library and author of the “Libro por libro” column in School Library Journal. Pam Fochtman, President of Lorito Books, will moderate the panel. The objective of the panel is twofold: to illuminate the process of how authors create stories that inspire and how to identify the materials that engage young Latinos.
